Helping Hands Essay

By performing an anonymous good deed, I felt good about myself and brightened some other people’s holidays. My plan was to choose five people, two boys, two girls, and one elderly person, and give them a holiday gift. By doing this I will feel better about myself and they will have a more cheerful holiday.

To execute my plan I first needed to find recipients for the gifts. I found four children, two boys and two girls that were missing a parent, or if they had some sort of deep tragedy in life. I compiled four baskets. The first basket contained action figures and dinosaurs, and it was given to a boy who lost his mother and sister in a car accident. The second basket included Hotwheel cars and some track pieces, and it was given to a boy whose house had burned down. The third and fourth basket went to two little girls that live in a poor neighborhood and both parents are unemployed. The baskets consisted of legoes and the other of an art set. I then compiled a fifth basket for an elderly woman who had recently lost her husband. Her basket was made up of a few puzzle books and some novels. I placed all their baskets on their doorsteps and left a note saying; “I hope this brightens your holiday” then I signed it “Santa”.

By carrying out this act I assume that it made for some cheerful holiday attitudes. I can’t say for sure because I didn’t see their reaction. I think it would take their minds off their recent or past tragedies. It might also show them that kindness is the best cure for sadness and maybe it will help them move on from their own morn.

The feeling I got from performing this anonymous deed was immensely gratifying. It is a little weird not knowing the reaction coming from the recipients, but just thinking about how I would feel in their shoes, I know I would be extremely happy and would enjoy my holiday much more. I feel like I am actually Santa and could have changed someone’s life.

By doing anonymous acts of kindness towards someone who has lost something in life, I cheered someone up for the holidays and I will feel good about knowing I have done so. To add to the feeling, in the future I could redo the act, but start a chain reaction. I should add a note in the letter encouraging the recipient to continue the act by giving to five more people.
